MacWorld kicked off in San Francisco yesterday afternoon without Apple’s presence for the first time (ever?). Many are wondering if this is the first of the last for the MacWorld expo. I hope MacWorld will continue and Apple will eventually come back. There is nothing like waking up early to drive down to San Francisco to see the product Steve Jobs made us all want so badly.

Take a look at this years best products:

Unibody MacBook Pro Services

4 February, 2010 (15:32) | Business News | By: n8

We are now offering Unibody MacBook Pro services. The Unibody MacBook Pro’s are really well designed computers. They are easier to work with than any of the 1-8 year old apple laptops that I have worked with, except for one thing: the displays.

The displays on these laptops look really nice, but they are really awful when you are trying to replace one component (ie the LCD). Apple actually replaces the entire top casing (LCD+Glass+Lid+Wiring+iSight) when something breaks (usually $8-1200 quote), but it is possible to replace one component at a time. That is what we do! We replace just the broken components and save you money by doing so.

We offer the replacement of just the LCD, just the glass, and both! Prices are substantially lower than the quote the Apple store will give you, and you are getting the exact same product. We only use new OEM displays.

We also offer other repairs for the new Unibody MacBook Pro’s including hard drive upgrades (including Solid State Hard Drives!), optical drive replacements, Memory (RAM) upgrades, and more!

Check out the new services page.

SEO with iWeb.

22 September, 2009 (14:26) | iWeb | By: n8

Everybody is talking SEO nowadays and most people are saying it is not possible with iWeb.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Basically everybody goes to google, bing, msn, or yahoo in order to find what they are looking for. These search engines then supply the user with links to webpages they think the user wants to see.

Search engines look at particular things in webpages like number of adds, keywords, site organization, etc. If you optimize your site for the search engines, they will give people links to your site before giving links to somebody who has a site with tons of adds, not many keywords, and a horrible page layout.

Here are a couple tips for easily optimizing your website:

1. Page titles. In iWeb, when you create a page it is given a title like “About Me” or “Welcome”. Change these titles to a keyword rich description of the page… like “MacUnwired. Services and Products for your Apple”.

2. Don’t use iWebs navigation menu. Click on inspector, page inspector, page, and uncheck show navigation menu. Build your own navigation menu by creating buttons with text and using the link tool in inspector to link your pages together. Apples navigation menu is created using search engine unfriendly java script.

3. Use web safe fonts. Everybody likes to make their website look cool with some neat font, but iWeb will many times convert non web safe fonts to images when uploading to your website. This makes all that beautiful text worthless to search engines.

4. Use “Rage” softwares iWeb SEO tool to help optimize your iWeb site. It is great (free) software that allows you to change page titles, add page descriptions and keywords, title images, and even add google analytics code to your iweb built site!

I will add information to this post in the future, and possibly create a page with more information about SEO and iWeb. Until then, I hope somebody finds this info helpful!

Taking pictures of webpages.

19 September, 2009 (11:41) | OS 10 | By: n8

Have you ever been working on your computer and wished you could take a picture of your screen? Mac OS 10 has some great screen capture tools built into the operating system. You can take pictures of your entire screen, an open window, or just an area you select, all with the following keyboard commands:
Entire screen picture: Command (the apple key right next to the space bar)+Shift+3
Take picture of single window: Command+Shift+4 then click the mouse button and your mouse turns into a camera. Point the camera at the window you want to capture and click!
Take picture of custom area: Command+Shift+4. Your mouse pointer will turn into a select tool, click and drag to select the area you want to take a picture of.

All these commands will place the picture files on your desktop.

Most people know the keyboard commands for taking pictures of their screen… but what if you want to capture an entire webpage screen, but you can’t see the entire webpage on your screen and therefore can’t take a picture of the entire page in one shot. Paparazzi is a great free program that allows you to take screenshots of entire webpages easily! This is especially handy for students or professionals who need to show an entire webpage in their presentations.

Here is a video showing the different ways to capture images of your screen. Click the full screen button to view the video larger.

Creating a video surveillance system with your Mac.

18 September, 2009 (09:07) | Uncategorized | By: n8

There are a couple really good options out there for anybody that wants to have a video surveillance system without paying the monthly fees and ridiculous hardware prices charged by companies like ADT, etc.

If you have a Mac, and you pay some money for some extra webcams that are supported, evological has excellent software for $30! The software will allow you to do a lot of different setups including setting your cameras to be motion sensing, and when the motion is sensed the program can do multiple different actions, including sending you an email with a picture of what is causing the motion.

I highly suggest checking out the program if you are thinking of installing a security system in your home or business but don’t need what large companies like ADT offer.

You can read all about the program and find a great compatible camera list at www.evological.com.

MS Laptop Hunters Campaign.

14 September, 2009 (11:47) | Reviews | By: n8

Nobody seems surprised that Microsoft has launched a campaign where it sets up Macs as being too expensive for the hardware, and not the peoples choice. Giampaolo puts what Microsoft is trying to say into a nutshell, “This is so sexy, but Macs to me are about aesthetics more than they are the computing power. I don’t want to pay for the brand. I want to pay for the computer”.

The PC is touted as being the peoples choice; from the aspiring “artist”, to a mother and son.

Besides the entire campaign being flawed at its core (I believe), what is most surprising is they are breaking one of the big rules in marketing: NEVER advertise as being better then the little guy. When you market your product as being better than a competitor that has a significantly lower market-share, you risk lending credibility to the brand you are trying to ruin!

In other words, MS is actually telling people that Apple is threatening their business. It is very difficult to threaten a company with a 90% market share without having a superior product.

iPhones and Babies

14 September, 2009 (11:44) | My Family | By: n8

My wife’s iPhone started having some issues about a month ago. It started with the WiFi not working. When settings was open, the WiFi button would be grayed and it would say “No WiFi Available”.

Next the clock started having a mind of its own. Sometimes it would be right on the button, sometimes 15 minutes slow, sometimes hours slow.

And finally, calls started coming thru about 75% of the time. Texts would come through immediately about 25% of the time, with the other 75% taking hours or days to come through.

Although it is possible to live with a phone acting like this, it is far from ideal. So I took it down to our friendly Apple store for replacement.

The Apple “Genius” took a look at it and tried all the standard reset stuff (which I had already tried), but to no avail. He then checked the “water damage sensors”, and found that both sensors had been set off.

I asked what could have caused that, and he said it would have had to be dunked in water. Well, I know that didn’t happen, so I asked about rain drops. He said that is very unlikely. Then I asked about our 1 year old son.

My wife and I have given the cell phone to my son to play with while music is playing, or a child’s app is on the screen. During the “everything goes in mouth” stage, he would occasionally taste it to see how it would work.

The “genius” smiled and said, “That is what did it! I see that all the time. You have no idea how much I see that! Parents give them to their children, the child pops it in their mouth, sensors go off and water damage can occur.”

Turns out that Apple just recently started replacing phones with water damage for $199. So instead of paying the close to $500 retail value of the phone, you can get it replaced for the AT&T discounted price of $199.

Open Source Software

14 September, 2009 (11:42) | Tips and Tricks | By: n8

Most people know about the great open source programs out there that allow you to complete your work without spending thousands of dollars on software.

One of the most popular is OpenOffice.org; the open source word, spreadsheet, and presentation software meant to replace Microsoft Office.

One of my favorite open source applications is known as GIMP, which stands for: GNU Image Manipulation Program.

GIMP is a program that is meant to replace Adobe’s Photoshop. Although there is still work that needs to be completed to make it as powerful as Photoshop, GIMP is a great tool for those of us who don’t want to spend all of our money on software.
